HC Deb 27 February 1918 vol 103 c1353
69. Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Minister of National Service whether he is aware that some military representatives appearing before Appeal Tribunals receive written statements bearing on cases coming before the tribunal, and that such statements are submitted at private sittings of the tribunal as evidence against the application for exemption without the applicant being aware of the statement or its contents, and therefore unable to deal with it; and whether he will give instructions that all evidence submitted against an application for exemption shall be submitted in the presence of the applicant?

Mr. BECK

I am not aware that any National Service Representatives submit before Appeal Tribunals at preliminary private sittings any written statements bearing on cases which are to come before the tribunals. The Regulations governing the procedure of tribunals provide that it is competent to the tribunals, if they think fit, to take into consideration any written statement sent by any party to the application, including the National Service representative, but such, statement must be read at the hearing.
