HC Deb 21 February 1918 vol 103 c922
11. Mr. O'DONNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether Johanna M'Carthy, evicted tenant on the Ventry estate, Dingle, was awarded £40 for buildings; whether the inspector of the Congested Districts Board in charge of the estate, seeing the condition of the buildings, refused to do anything as he regarded the sum as wholly inadequate; whether under Section 18 of the Evicted Tenants Act, 1907, the Congested Districts Board is empowered to make Giants in cases such as hers; and, if so, will steps be taken to repair her dwelling-house?

Mr. DUKE

I am informed that the Estates Commissioners decided to make a grant of £40 for the improvement of the buildings on Mrs. Johanna McCarthy's holding, and that the money is available if Mrs. M'Carthy carries out the work. The Congested Districts Board declined to do the work on behalf of Mrs. M'Carthy for £40, and they are not prepared to make any grant in respect of it.

Mr. O'DONNELL

Is it the fact that the inspector of the Congested Districts Board stated that £40 was wholly inadequate, and that nothing could be done to the house? Under these circumstances, will the Congested Districts Board take the matter up?

Mr. DUKE

It does not follow that because a grant to construct buildings is inadequate to complete the process of construction, that there is any right in the applicant to get the full amount.

Mr. O'DONNELL

Is not the amount given to build a house, and, if it does not build a house, what good is it?
