HC Deb 20 February 1918 vol 103 c726
44. Sir A. FELL

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food what steps he is taking to make the public aware that the Government have many thousands of barrels of Norwegian herrings available for consumption, from what retailers such herrings can be purchased, and at what prices?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of FOOD (Mr. Clynes)

So large a demand has been created for pickled herrings that only a few thousand barrels of the Norwegian herrings remain unsold. In these circumstances it is not considered advisable to take any further steps to stimulate the demand. The Ministry has no detailed list of fishmongers who stock the herrings, the majority of which are sold as red herrings, after being smoked in this country.

Sir A. FELL

Is it the fact that some 200,000 barrels of these herrings are not yet sold, and will the hon. Gentleman see that they are put into common consumption?

Mr. CLYNES

There was recently a large number, but at a more recent date the demand was very great, and there is not a large amount left.
