HC Deb 19 February 1918 vol 103 cc620-1
78. Mr. T. WILSON

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that, owing to circumstances over which they have no control, a large number of sea faring men are landed at ports other than those they signed on from; and whether he will arrange for these men to travel from the port at which they are landed to the port they signed on at at cheap railway fares?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Wardle)

Arrangements are already in operation under which seamen discharged before a superintendent of a mercantile marine office may obtain, if their ship has been diverted by a naval or transport authority, a railway warrant to their usual port of discharge without payment; and any other seamen discharged before a superintendent of a. mercantile marine office may obtain railway tickets to enable them to travel to their home port at the old fare without the 50 per cent. increase.
