asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Shipping Controller whether Japanese merchant steamers have been used for bringing supplies of food and munitions of war to the United Kingdom and France; if so, can he state how many Japanese steamers, other than those owned by the Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaishi, have arrived in British or French ports during the twelve months ending 31st December last and their gross register tonnage; and whether he can state the amount of cargo discharged in United Kingdom and French ports by these Japanese steamers?

The answer to the first part of the question is In the affirmative. With regard to the remainder of the question, the net tonnage of Japanese steamers arriving in United Kingdom ports with cargo in 1917 was 185,482, and their number was forty-four. The remainder of the information is riot-available.
