asked the Undersecretary of State for War whether, considering that it is entirely in the discretion of the Commander-in-Chief in East | Africa to give the temporary rank of brigadier-general to colonels commanding, column equivalent in strength to a brigade, intimation of this will be conveyed to Lieutenant-General Van de-Venter with a view to the grant by him of the temporary rank of brigadier-general to the colonels who were in command of such columns with an antedate from date of appointment?

It is within the discretion of a Commander-in-Chief to recommend temporary rank, but it can only be granted by the War Office. Lieutenant-General Van de Venter is well aware of this
