HC Deb 14 February 1918 vol 103 cc248-9
18. Major NEWMAN

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he will state the conditions under which a motor-car can be used for other than business purposes in Ireland; whether, during the recent election in the South Division of Armagh, twenty cars left Dundalk with out authorised name-plates and the drivers furnished with licences signed by the hon. Member for East Clare authorising them to use a motor-car in accordance with the duties assigned to them in the name of the Irish Republic; and whether, in the event of a motor-car so used being contrary to any Regulations issued by the Irish Government, action has been taken against the owners?

Mr. DUKE

I am sending the hon. and gallant Member copy of a notice containing the conditions under which motorcars can be used at elections. I am informed that the police have particulars of a number of motor-cars which were used at the Armagh election, and that a decision as to prosecution will be taken without delay.
