HC Deb 07 August 1918 vol 109 c1337
26. Mr. MACMASTER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he will state how far the Summerdown Camp at Eastbourne, where there are many wounded and legless soldiers, is from the sea, and also from the nearest shopping district of the town; whether there are any seats along the roadside leading from the camp to the sea or to the town; if any, how many, and at what distance is the nearest from the camp; and, if not, is it the town or the Government that is responsible for this lack of consideration for our wounded and disabled defenders?

Mr. MACPHERSON

The camp is a little over 1½ miles from the sea, and the distance to certain shops in the Old Town is about 400 yards, and to the best shopping centre in Eastbourne about one mile. There are several routes from the camp to the sea, and on some of these there are seats; in Gildridge Park there are some 100 seats, the nearest being about 500 yards from the camp. The route to the town is the same as several of those to the sea, and there is also a good bus service from the centre of the town to within about 100 yards of the camp. With reference to the statement in the first part of my hon. and learned Friend's question, there is only one legless soldier in the camp, and it is hoped to make arrangements to transfer him to a hospital nearer his home.
