HC Deb 07 August 1918 vol 109 cc1335-6
24. Major CHAPPLE

asked whether nurses trained at the following hospitals are eligible for appointment to the Army Nursing Services: Glasgow Western Infirmary, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Guy's Hospital, University College Hospital, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and the London Hospital; and, if so, what are the years of training in the wards of each hospital, respectively, as stated in the certificates presented by such nurses in evidence of qualification for appointment?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the reply which I gave on the 18th July. All the hospitals mentioned in the question have more than 100 beds, and nurses trained therein are eligible for appointment to the Army Nursing Service.

Major CHAPPLE

Will the right hon. Gentleman answer that part of the question which asks what is the period of training in the wards of each of these hospitals as stated in the certificate presented by the nurses as evidence of qualification?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I can only speak for the War Office appointments. We do not appoint any nurse unless we are absolutely assured that she has had two years' training, and one years' service in the wards of a hospital of this kind.

Major CHAPPLE

Is that one years service made to cover the farming out of nurses during the third year in which the nurse goes out and does private nursing for the sake of pecuniary gain to the hospital, and is that the case with regard to any one of these hospitals?

Mr. MACPHERSON

As I understand the one years' service must be service in the ward. I do not know what my hon. and gallant Friend means by farming out. I have nothing to do with that.
