HC Deb 06 August 1918 vol 109 c1092
53. Sir FORTESCUE FLANNERY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the intention of the Government as to the proposed legislation, already promised, to protect the position of men called up under the Military Service Acts as regards their contracts for civilian service with their employers; whether the Government have been advised that recent legislation does not include the carrying forward over the war period of contracts for civil employment; and whether the omission can now be made good?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Bonar Law)

I am advised that there is some doubt whether the contract of service of the nature indicated by my hon. Friend is put an end to by the calling up of an employé or merely suspended during the period of his military service. I shall consider, however, whether it would not be possible when further emergency legislation is introduced to include a provision declaring that such contracts are, in fact, suspended.
