§ 6. Colonel STIRLINGasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can give the average cost of 9 ft. by 10 in. by 5 in. railway sleepers produced by Scottish home timber merchants and by overseas contingents, respectively?
Sir A. STANLEYI have no information as to the cost of production of 9 ft. by 10 in. by 5 in. sleepers by Scottish merchants, but the merchants sell the sleepers at the maximum prices allowed by the Home-grown Timber Prices Order, 1918. These sleepers can be produced at costs within those rates by the operations of the Timber Supplies Department and overseas contingents.
