HC Deb 25 April 1918 vol 105 cc1111-2
34. Mr. PONSONBY

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is aware that, on the recommendation of the local food control committee of Girvan, the Food Controller has consented to raise the price of bread to 10d. per 4-lb. loaf; whether any protest has been received from the inhabitants of Girvan on the subject; and whether he will withhold this sanction to the proposed increase?

Mr. CLYNES

I am informed that the local food control committee for Girvan propose to issue provisional licences to enable retailers to sell bread, brought from outside, at 10d. per 4-lb. loaf during the holiday season, June to September, as the supply of locally baked bread will be inadequate for the influx of visitors. No change will be made in the statutory price of locally baked bread, and the proposed increase is intended merely to cover the additional charge for freight. The particulars and costs of the intended licence will be investigated in due course, and the decision of the Food Controller will be based upon the accountant's report. Local opinion appears to be divided as to the wisdom of the proposed course.
