HC Deb 24 April 1918 vol 105 cc1003-4
77. Sir ARTHUR FELL

asked the President of the Local Government Board if he has considered the difficulties experienced by householders in filling up the form recently sent them for the registration of voters under the Representation of the People Act, particularly with regard to the women entitled to vote; and if he will consider the necessity of issuing an explanatory circular on the matter?

Mr. FISHER

I fear that the form may present some difficulties to those who are inexperienced in filling up forms for claiming votes, but the form adopted is, I think, as free from difficulty as any that could be devised if the instructions printed on it are carefully read and followed. In cases of doubt the registration officer and his staff will, I am sure, be ready to give any necessary assistance. The issue of a Circular to householders is not under present circumstances practicable.

Sir A. FELL

Is it proposed in this Circular that women should be entered as occupiers, and does that apply to domestic servants, housekeepers and persons of that kind?

Mr. FISHER

I cannot answer a question of that somewhat vague character. I must ask my hon. Friend to put it down.

Sir A. FELL

Can women who wish to claim be entered in the form which is issued.

Mr. FISHER

Certainly; they can be entered in the form.
