HC Deb 16 April 1918 vol 105 c224
71. Mr. BOWERMAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, before sanctioning any curtailment of the railway and tramway services within the Metropolitan area, steps will be taken to ensure that the travelling facilities at present available for the workers employed upon daily papers and others whose work is necessarily continued until the early hours of the morning the majority of whom live long distances from their respective places of employment, shall not be curtailed?

Sir A. STANLEY

I fear that I cannot say more at present than that, as far as the Board of Trade are concerned, every endeavour will be made in imposing such travelling restrictions as may be necessary to avoid the infliction of undue hardship on workers.

Mr. BOWERMAN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the awkward position in which hundreds upon hundreds of men will be placed if the night services are curtailed to any extent?

Sir A. STANLEY

I am quite aware of that, and it will be borne in mind. So far as I know, it is not proposed now seriously to curtail the night services.
