HC Deb 09 April 1918 vol 104 cc1322-3
38. Captain SHEEHAN

asked the Minister of Reconstruction whether the Government have made, or are about to make, a sufficiently substantial Grant to enable local authorities in England to place in hand without further delay the work of preparing designs for laying out sites and for the purchase of land for housing schemes to be undertaken immediately after the War; if so, whether any similar provision has been made to meet the case of Ireland; whether special designs have been prepared for England and £5,000 granted by the Government to the Royal Institute of British Architects for this purpose; whether it is proposed to provide for the building of 300,000 dwellings in England and Wales and 50,000 in Scotland, but no mention is made of Ireland; and can he state the number it is intended to build there?

The MINISTER of RECONSTRUCTION (Dr. Addison)

I would refer the hon. Member to the answers given by my right hon. Friend the Chief Secretary to himself and to the hon. Member for the St. Patrick's Division of Dublin on the 21st February and on the 14th February, respectively, to which I have nothing to add at present.

Captain SHEEHAN

Is the right hon. Gentleman in a position to deny any statement in the question, and is the treatment for Ireland going to be different or is it to be the same as for England in regard to housing? That is the question I want to be definitely answered.

Dr. ADDISON

I am not concerned in the statement on the Paper, but the report of my right hon. Friend, and I have not yet received it.
