HC Deb 27 November 1917 vol 99 cc1834-5
64. Mr. BYRNE

asked the Chief Secretary if he will cause inquiries to be made into the treatment of Irish prisoners sent to Armagh Prison; if they will be allowed to see visitors; and will he state the diet scale they are now on?

Mr. DUKE

If the prisoners referred to are those sentenced to imprisonment in default of bail, the Criminal Justice Administration Act, 1914, provides that such prisoners are subject to the same rules as ordinary prisoners sentenced to imprisonment without hard labour unless they are directed by the Court to be treated as offenders of the first or second division. I understand the Court gave no such directions, and that the governor of the prison has acted in accordance with the rules.
