HC Deb 27 November 1917 vol 99 cc1810-1
11. Mr. KING

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office at what price whisky is supplied to officers in the Expeditionary Force canteens; at what price is champagne there supplied; and why is there such a deficiency of light inexpensive wines in Expeditionary Force canteens?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Whisky is sold at prices ranging from 45 francs to 80 francs per dozen, according to the brand. Perrier-Jouet and Reserve Cuvée champagne are sold at 135 francs per dozen. Other brands of champagne and light wines are purchased locally in France, and the prices vary according to local conditions and the quality of the wine. I am advised that no complaints have been received regarding a deficiency of light inexpensive wines in the Expeditionary Force canteens.

Mr. KING

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this price for whisky means only a fifth of the price at which it is now selling in this country?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I cannot help that.
