HC Deb 22 November 1917 vol 99 c1367
26. Mr. ROWLANDS

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether it is the usual practice to supply uniforms to the men working about the Houses of Parliament free; is he aware that one man classed as a gatekeeper is being stopped Is. a week to pay for his uniform; and why an exception is being made in this case?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Sir Alfred Mond)

The answer to the first question is in the affirmative. It is not correct to say that ls. a week is being stopped from the gatekeeper's wages to pay for his uniform. Under the terms of the award of the Conciliation and Arbitration Board, the war bonus must be based on the ordinary remuneration, which is deemed to include the value of uniform. The value of the gatekeeper's uniform is estimated at ls. a week, and this brought his total emoluments up to 31s. a week. His bonus under the award was therefore 4s. a week instead of 5s., at which amount it would have been granted had his total emoluments not exceeded 30s. a week.

Mr. ROWLANDS

Is the same sytem of calculation adopted with regard to the other members of the staff?

Sir A. MOND

Yes, I believe so.
