HC Deb 19 November 1917 vol 99 cc854-5
53. Mr. KING

asked the Prime Minister whether Lord Northcliffe is returning to America in connection with his mission to the United States; whether it is intended to send the President of the Board of Trade on a similar or another mission to America; and, in the event of the absence of the President of the Board of Trade, who will take over the duties of that office?

Mr. BONAR LAW

This question is, I think, premature. No decision has yet been taken in either of the matters referred to.

Mr. KING

In coming to a decision will the Government consider what a lot of trouble Lord Northcliffe has made over here since he returned?

66. Mr. R. LAMBERT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give the names of the persons attached to Lord Northcliffe's mission to America; whether any of these persons received a salary or remuneration; what was the total cost of the mission to the nation; and whether further claims for payment are expected on this account?

Mr. BONAR LAW

As I have already stated, Lord Northcliffe proceeded to the United States in order to co-ordinate the activities of the various British missions already in that country. The cost of these missions is borne by the Departments concerned, and it would not be possible to obtain the information asked for with regard to the names of the members of the missions and the cost without an undue expenditure of time and labour.

Mr. BILLING

Will the right hon. Gentleman give the list of those gentlemen who refused the Air Ministry?

Mr. LYNCH

Did Lord Northcliffe receive any salary?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I assume not, but I have not made any inquiry.
