HC Deb 20 March 1917 vol 92 cc12-3
11. Mr. THORNE

asked the Minister of Munitions whether he has any official information showing that, as mentioned at the inquest on the victims of the recent explosion in the Fast of London, Dr. Angel, the chief chemist of the factory, who lost his life in the explosion, was a German or at least of German origin?

The MINISTER of MUNITIONS (Dr. Addison)

I am glad to have an opportunity of denying the cruel and stupid rumour to which my hon. Friend refers. Except for the fact that one of his grandparents was an Italian, Dr. Angel was entirely of British birth and extraction. The rumour referred to in my hon. Friend's question is the more cruel in that the evidence of the surviving employés in the factory seems to show that Dr. Angel, had he wished to do so, could have left the factory before the explosion took place, and that he sacrificed his own life in order to warn others.

12. Mr. THORNE

asked the Minister of Munitions what method is being adopted for the purpose of paying compensation to the householders in the recent East End explosion; if he can state whether the people who had pianos in their houses have been informed that the claim for the loss of a piano cannot in any way be considered; and if he intends taking any action in the matter?

Dr. ADDISON

The Ministry is willing to pay all reasonable claims, and the assessors have been instructed accordingly. I am not aware of any statements such as those referred to in the second part of the question, but if my hon. Friend will give me particulars I will have inquiry made.

Mr. THORNE

In the event of a dispute taking place between the assessor and the persons in question is there any court of appeal so as to get the matter properly adjusted?

Dr. ADDISON

I think it is all in working order, and I will give my hon. Friend further information.

Mr. HOGGE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the wives and dependants of the men who have been killed will get compensation?

Dr. ADDISON

Perhaps my hon. Friend will give me notice of a question of that character. I hope provision will be made for them.
