HC Deb 19 March 1917 vol 91 c1526
24. Mr. TICKLER

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food if he is aware that merchants and retailers are refusing to sell eating potatoes but that they are offering to sell the same as seed potatoes and thereby securing higher prices; and if he will take action to put a stop to this exploitation of the people?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of FOOD CONTROL (Captain Bathurst)

Merchants and retailers are prevented by the Seed Potatoes Order, 1916, from selling potatoes of various varieties and between certain specified limits of size as table potatoes. A higher price can be asked for such potatoes. If, however, any case is brought to the notice of the Food Controller in which the seed potato price is being charged in respect of potatoes which are really table potatoes, proceedings will be taken.
