HC Deb 14 March 1917 vol 91 cc1067-8
14. Mr. C. DUNCAN

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty the number of chief artificer engineers and artificer engineers who have been recommended by the Selection Board appointed by the Admiralty for promotion to engineer lieutenants, the number promoted, and what further number of these officers are to be promoted; and, if so, can he say the date when such promotion is likely to begin?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The number of chief artificer engineers and artificer engineers whose names have been forwarded by Fleet Selection Committees for Admiralty consideration as suitable for promotion to the rank of engineer lieutenant is 164. In several cases, however, qualifications were made, and some were not strongly recommended. Eighteen promotions to the rank of engineer lieutenant have been made. I should mention that two of these eighteen promotions were not from among the names forwarded by the Fleet Selection Committees, but were on account of special qualifications and services. There are no further vacancies at present, and the promotion of further officers in this way mutt depend on the requirements of the Service.
