HC Deb 06 March 1917 vol 91 cc210-1
54. Mr. WATT

asked the Minister of Munitions whether his Department has recently placed an embargo on the importation of magnesite; whether such embargo stops the business of many manufacturing firms in this country who are, in some instances, doing work for the shipbuilding yards; and whether he will allow these firms to be supplied with sufficient quantities to prevent the stoppage of their concerns, especially in view of the fact that magnesite comes largely from India?

Sir W. EVANS

No embargo has been placed upon the importation of magnesite, but special arrangements have been made to secure the maintenance of a sufficient supply for munitions purposes. These arrangements include the issue of an Order prohibiting the use of magnesite for certain purposes, for which efficient substitutes are available, without a permit from the Ministry of Munitions. Permits are granted in suitable cases. The imports of magnesite from India have been very largely increased at the instance of the Ministry.

Mr. WATT

Will the trades which are dependent upon the supply of this magnesite have this supply or have to shut up?

Sir W. EVANS

They will have to apply for permission and show that no substitutes are available before they get it.
