HC Deb 05 March 1917 vol 91 c29
52. Mr. BUTCHER

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will at an early opportunity introduce a Bill empowering the Secretary of State, in proper cases, to cancel certificates of naturalisation, as recommended by a Committee presided over by the right hon. Gentleman the senior Member for the University of Dublin?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The question of taking power to cancel certificates of naturalisation has for some time been under consideration of the Reconstruction Committee, and the Government will make a proposal on the subject, but no more definite announcement can be made until after the meeting of the Imperial Conference.

Mr. BUTCHER

Do I understand the right hon. Gentleman will bring in proposals for this purpose?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Proposals will first of all be submitted to representatives of the overseas Dominions.

Mr. BUTCHER

In view of the fact that the cancellation of these trade certificates which have been granted in this country does not require the consent of the Imperial Conference, will the right hon. Gentleman act in the matter promptly?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I am not sure my hon. Friend is correct in his view, but, in any case, I think it would be only right to consult the Dominion Premiers.
