HC Deb 28 June 1917 vol 95 cc518-9
55. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the repeated statements made on behalf of the Government that a measure of industrial compulsion would be introduced into Parliament if the campaign inaugurated by the National Service Department' proved a failure, he is now in a position to make a statement as to the success or failure of that campaign; and whether it is the intention of the Government to make any further departure in the direction of industrial compulsion?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The campaign referred to in the question has not proved a failure, as it has produced upwards of 350,000 volunteers. With regard to the second part of the question, it is not the intention of the Government to make a departure in the direction of industrial compulsion.

Mr. PRINGLE

How many of the 300,000 volunteers are real and how many are bogus volunteers, such as Members of Parliament?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I have no information on that subject, but I have no reason to believe that nearly the whole of them are not real volunteers.

Mr. KING

Is not the real test how many have been placed in positions in which they would not have been—

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member should give notice of that question.
