HC Deb 28 June 1917 vol 95 c505
9. Mr. LYNCH

asked how long it is proposed to continue martial law in force in Ireland?

Mr. DUKE

The Defence of the Realm Acts and Regulations are in force in Ireland. Martial law in the popular meaning of the expression is not. The Defence Acts apply to the whole of the United Kingdom, and were enacted for the period of the War

Mr. LYNCH

The question is not whether it is there in popular belief but as a matter of fact.

Mr. DUKE

I do not know what martial law in fact means, but I know that the administration of Ireland has been conducted within the law, and the only exceptional powers in existence are those issued under the Defence of the Realm Regulations.

Mr. LYNCH

Will the right hon. Gentleman remove all doubt by removing all martial law?
