HC Deb 28 June 1917 vol 95 cc520-1
51. Mr. KING

asked the Prime Minister whether, in his attendance at the War Cabinet, on matters excluding domestic affairs of Great Britain, General Smuts is an advisor merely, or whether, equally with other members of the War Cabinet, he shares responsibility for decisions taken?

Mr. BONAR LAW

General Smuts' position has been stated clearly in answers to previous questions, and I can add nothing to the replies already given.

Mr. KING

Then we may take it that he accepts no responsibility for the actions and decisions taken?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Not at all. He accepts the responsibility which necessarily comes from his giving advice or assisting us in our deliberations.

Mr. LYNCH

Would it not be better to find General Smuts a seat in this House?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Personally, I should be very glad to see that course taken, but there are objections to that from General Smuts' point of view.
