HC Deb 25 June 1917 vol 95 c31
79. Mr. HOHLER

asked whether it is proposed to put prisoners of war into any and which fixed hutment camps in Great Britain; if so, will he state whether those camps are now occupied by British troops; and whether he proposes to put our troops thus; displaced under canvas?

Mr. MACPHERSON

It is intended to put prisoners of war into hutments in Great Britain should the necessity arise and troops displaced will be put under canvas or in hired buildings, according to the time of the year. It is not considered desirable in the public interest to name the hutments.

Mr. HOHLER

Would it not be better to put prisoners under canvas and leave our own soldiers in the huts?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I have made inquiries about that particular point and I am informed that it is in the interests of discipline that for some time the men should be under canvas.
