HC Deb 21 June 1917 vol 94 cc1966-7
82. Mr. WATT

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether any arrangement has been made by his Department to allow the steamer "Isle of Cumbrae" the licence to ply on the Clyde on the same terms as other steamers, in view of the fact that the shipbuilders and munition workers in the West of Scotland are anxious to have every facility for getting their health reestablished during their approaching holiday?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The "Isle of Cumbrae" is one of the steamers that is under charter to one of the railway companies. The licence to ply on the Clyde covers the service of any steamers that it may be found desirable to employ on the service. Colonel John M. Denny is the chairman of a small committee of the local interests concerned with the Clyde paddle steamers appointed by the Shipping Controller, and the allocation of a particular steamer to a particular service is one that should be adjusted locally by that committee. I have put my hon. and learned Friend's suggestion to Colonel Denny.

Mr. WATT

Has the right hon. Gentleman received any reply?

Dr. MACNAMARA

No; I only put it to-day.
