HC Deb 20 June 1917 vol 94 cc1795-6
70. Mr. ARTHUR SAMUELS

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, having regard to Section 31 (7) of the Representation of the People Bill, it is intended that the sheriff shall, as heretofore, act as returning officer in Ireland; whether it is proposed that the scale of maximum charges to be framed under Section 22 (1) of the Bill shall contain an item to cover the reasonable charges of the sheriff in Ireland acting as returning officer for his personal services as apart from actual outlay; and whether the proposed scale of charges will be submitted to the House of Commons before being prescribed by the Treasury under Section 22 (4) of the Bill?

Mr. BRACE

The answers to the first and second parts of the question are in the affirmative. As to the third part, I would refer the hon. and learned Member to the reply given on the 7th instant to the hon. Member for Dartford.

Mr. ROWLANDS

May I ask when it is intended to issue this statement about the scale of payment to returning officers which the House desires to have and which some hon. Members meant to compare with that in the Act of 1875?
