HC Deb 19 June 1917 vol 94 cc1622-3
34. Mr. DUFFY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he is aware that three small holdings, the combined valuation of which does not exceed £10, were excluded from purchase on the Derrybrien section of the Clanricarde estate; whether he is aware that the district of Derrybrien is pasted with congestion; and, considering the fact that the three tenants mentioned hold turbary and grazing rights on the mountain in common with the other tenants included in the purchase, will steps be taken by the Congested Districts Board to acquire the excluded holdings in order to bring them within the scheme of general improvement contemplated by the Board?

Mr. DUKE

Three holdings were excluded from the purchase of the Derrybrien section of Lord Clanricarde's property; in one case because the tenant alleged he had not paid rent for over twenty years and claimed a prescriptive title to the holding, and in the other two because the tenants would not give the officers of the Congested Districts Board the necessary information as to their tenancies. The three tenants have turbary and grazing rights on the mountain. The purchase of the Clanricarde estate under compulsory powers is completed, and the holdings referred to cannot now be included in the purchase. There are no doubt many congested Holdings in the Derrybrien district.
