HC Deb 19 June 1917 vol 94 cc1589-90
12. Mr. ARTHUR RICHARDSON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether lie is aware that John R. Payne Lock endeavoured to enlist in the Army at Newcastle-on-Tyne in January, 1915, and was rejected; that in December, 1915, he attested under the Derby scheme; that in March, 1916, he was medically examined and was classed as a B 3 man; that in May, 1916, he was called up and, on explaining the matter by letter to the Leeds recruiting officer, that officer denied all knowledge of this examination; that, acting on the Staffordshire recruiting officer's advice, on 24th May, 1916, he was again medically examined and, under the new categories, he was classed as a 03 man, whereupon his papers were cancelled, as C 3 men were not needed; that, owing to his low category, in February last he was removed to Rotherham to release a, man for general service; that, later on, he was again called up and his employers appealed for his retention; that at the hearing of the case it was discovered that the military authorities had placed him in Category A; that subsequently he was again examined medically at Pontefract, where he was examined by a doctor in private clothes, although his medical sheet was signed by a lieutenant-colonel of the Royal Army Medical Corps, who put him down as a B 1 man; that at the adjourned hearing of the appeal his full medical history was gone into and the tribunal sent him a special medical board; and that he appeared before the board at Leeds, who, without any medical examination whatsoever, passed him as a B 1 man; and whether, in view of the whole of the above facts, he will inquire into the whole circumstances, in order that justice may be done to this man?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I am making full inquiries into this case, and will let my hon. Friend know the result as soon as possible.
