HC Deb 19 June 1917 vol 94 c1605
85. Mr. FIELD

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland what arrangements are being made by means of National Service to ensure that harvest operations shall be efficiently carried out; whether he is aware of the exodus of labour from Ireland; whether over 1,000 men have been obliged to leave St. Patrick's Division in consequence of restricting the brewing, distilling, and malting industry; and whether he can state how it is proposed to find employment in Ireland?

Mr. DUKE

Proposals for dealing with harvesting operations in the coming harvest season have been prepared and are under consideration. A considerable number of men have come to England for employment. I have no statistics which enable me to deal separately with the case of the St. Patrick's Division of Dublin. As to the last inquiry in the question, I would refer to the answer I gave on the 15th May to a question of the hon. Member for the Harbour Division of Dublin.
