HC Deb 19 June 1917 vol 94 cc1618-9
81. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether the censor in Ireland is bound by the pledge of the Government that the truth should not be struck out in the interest of a Government Department; if so, will he explain why no Irish newspaper has been allowed to publish the fact that Irish political prisoners in England under sentences of secret courts-martial have been chained in groups in addition to being handcuffed; and will he say by what official and through what medium of communication an entire despatch was censored out of the Dublin "Evening Telegraph" of 9th June, leaving standing only the heading "Visits to Lewes Prison"?

Mr. DUKE

The censorship is not conducted in the interest of any Government Department. I am informed that certain statements which appeared to be calculated to inflame public opinion in Ireland have been censored, but that no dispatch bearing the heading "Visits to Lewes Prison" was censored in the Dublin. "Evening Telegraph" of 9th June.
