HC Deb 13 June 1917 vol 94 cc944-5
75. Mr. PENNEFATHER

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Local Government Board if he is aware that the owners of small house property in certain streets in Kirkdale have, under pressure, ceased to charge increases of rent which were in contravention of the provisions of the Increase of Bent and Mortgage Interest (War Restrictions) Act, but have failed to refund the increases already paid; and, failing such restitution, will the Local Government Board, if placed in possession of the facts, draw the attention of the Public Prosecutor to the matter?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Hayes Fisher)

My hon. Friend has communicated with me on this subject. As he is aware, a Bill is now before Parliament which proposes to make sums paid in excess of the standard rent recoverable from the landlord by the tenant.
