HC Deb 13 June 1917 vol 94 c955
64. Mr. KEATING

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that Simon Norris, of Graiguenamanagh, county Kilkenny, is entitled to several weeks' unemployment benefit under the National Insurance Act; and that the inspector has refused to make the payment unless Norris consents to accept work in England and to go to Thomas-town, eight Irish miles away, to sign an agreement to that effect; whether he is aware that there is no railway communication between these towns and Norris would be compelled to walk, as the hire of a conveyance would cost a week's wages; and will he take steps to make other arrangements to meet cases of this kind and instruct the local inspector to send Norris by post the amount to which he is legally entitled?

Mr. HODGE

I am making inquiry, and will let my hon. Friend know the result in due course. I may add that provision is already made for paying benefit by post where workmen reside at a distance from a local office of the Unemployment Fund.
