HC Deb 13 June 1917 vol 94 c951
95. Mr. KEATING

asked the Chief Secretary if he is aware that the boatmen in the employment of the Grand Canal Company, Limited, receive an average weekly wage of 18s. 11d., which is an increase of only 1s. over the rate prevailing for twenty years before the War; that the company received power on 1st April, 1917, to increase freights by 6d. per ton and undertook to increase wages on obtaining that power, but have not kept that promise; and that the workmen have to provide fuel and light in the boats out of their wages; and whether, owing to the cost of living, he will take steps to compel the company to increase their wages or give a war bonus in accordance with their promise?

Mr. DUKE

The business of the canal company is not under public control.

Mr. KEATING

Will the right hon. Gentleman use his influence with the company to induce them to keep their contracts with the workmen?

Mr. DUKE

I am afraid the only influence which could be used on the company would be to put money into their bank account.
