§ 19. Mr. WILKIEasked the Under-Secretary of State for War the number of deaths during the first two years of the War amongst prisoners of war in the custody of the British authorities?
§ Mr. J. HOPE (Lord of the Treasury)The total number of all ranks and all nationalities, both combatants and civilians, who died when prisoners of war in our hands, up to the 4th August, 1916, was 2,256. This includes those who, having been seriously wounded and abandoned by the enemy, died shortly after capture.
§ Mr. PEMBERTON BILLINGMay I ask whether that figure does not compare very favourably proportionately with our prisoners who have died in Germany?
