HC Deb 12 June 1917 vol 94 cc752-3
Mr. ROWLANDS

(by Private Notice) asked the Minister of Munitions whether at any time the Ministry of Munitions have employed a secret service; and whether any such organisation still exists in the Ministry of Munitions?

Mr. KELLAWAY

A few months after the establishment of the Ministry of Munitions a section of the Special Investigation Department, under a senior officer, was set aside and attached to the Ministry for the purpose of protecting munition factories from espionage and sabotage, and to make inquiries with respect to aliens coming into munitions work. At the beginning of February last my right hon. Friend, after reviewing the whole situation, decided that it was no longer necessary to continue the section, and arrangements were subsequently carried into effect whereby the investigations concerning aliens were carried out by the Intelligence Department of the War Office and any other work that might be required performed by Scotland Yard, which acts for all the Government Departments.

Mr. ANDERSON

Can the hon. Gentleman say if one of the agents employed was a man calling himself Alexander Gordon?

Mr. KELLAWAY

To the best of my knowledge the man calling himself Alexander Gordon was never employed by the Ministry. He, certainly, was never one of the staff.
