HC Deb 12 June 1917 vol 94 c755
12. Mr. G. FABER

asked how many British combatant prisoners of war there were in Germany, and how many in Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria, respectively, when the returns were last made up, and the dates of such returns?

Mr. JAMES HOPE (Lord of the Treasury)

According to returns made up to the end of May, the number of British combatant prisoners of war of the Regular and Territorial Forces, Royal Navy, Royal Naval Division, and Indian Forces is as follows:—

Officers. Other ranks.
Germany 1,354 34,304
Turkey 556 8,355
Austria 5 12
Bulgaria 22 523
Total 1,937 43,194
The German figures include a certain number of prisoners taken in East Africa. Perhaps I may repeat that these figures include all the Indian native troops.

Mr. FABER

Can the hon. Gentleman give the House any further information as to the number of the native Indians?

Mr. HOPE

Certainly. I am speaking from memory, but I think I am right in saying that the great, majority of the prisoners in Turkish hands are native Indians.
