HC Deb 12 June 1917 vol 94 c774
Mr. RONALD McNEILL

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is in a position to make any statement with regard to the situation in Greece?

Lord R. CECIL

I am afraid I cannot add much at present to what has already appeared in the Press. Hon. Members will have gathered that, in order to secure unity of Allied diplomacy in Greece, the French and British Governments have jointly appointed M. Jonnart to be High Commissioner for Allied purposes in Greece. He is entrusted, among other things, with the duty of securing control of the Thessalian harvest.

Mr. WHYTE

Will the new Commissioner in Greece exercise the rights of the three Treaty Powers, including Russia?

Lord R. CECIL

No, Sir. The three Treaty Powers, including the British Government, will still continue to be represented in Greece. M. Jonnart is merely entrusted with the duty of representing the British and French Governments at present for Allied purposes, whenever they wish to make Allied representations.

Mr. LYNCH

If M. Jonnart discovers that King Constantine has exceeded his legal powers as conferred by Treaty, will he dispossess him?

Lord R. CECIL

That question should be addressed to M. Jonnart.

Mr. KING

Has not that been discovered already a great many times over?
