HC Deb 07 June 1917 vol 94 cc335-6
83. Sir GEORGE GREENWOOD

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether any feathers of wild birds, the importation of which was prohibited by proclamation on 23rd February, 1917, have been imported into this country since the 48,346 lbs. weight of such feathers were imported in the months of March and April last; if so, will he say what was the weight of such feathers so imported; and why their importation was allowed?

Mr. ROBERTS

During May feathers of the kind referred to were imported to the amount of 13,681 lbs. weight. They were admitted as being en route at the time of prohibition.

Colonel YATE

Will any further be admitted during the present month?

Mr. ROBERTS

No, Sir.

Sir G. GREENWOOD

Is not this trade entirely, or almost entirely, in the hands of aliens?

Mr. ROBERTS

I do not think that arises.

Sir G. GREENWOOD

You cannot answer it.
