HC Deb 13 July 1917 vol 95 cc2289-90
33. Mr. OUTHWAITE

asked what steps have been taken to recruit men between the ages of forty-one and fifty in accordance with the announced decision of the War Office; and what response, if any, there has been to the appeal?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Direct enlistment of men between the ages mentioned has been proceeding since the announcement was made. A fair number of really useful men are being obtained as a result of the appeal for men of these ages. I am glad to have this opportunity of again referring to the matter, so that the fact that these over-age enlistments are proceeding may not be lost sight of.

Mr. OUTHWAITE

Does a "fair number" mean that there has been no great rush of these men to join?

Mr. MACPHERSON

You cannot assume any such thing.
