HC Deb 06 July 1917 vol 95 c1477
14. Sir HENRY CRAIK

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether there are two distinct standards of eyesight for commissioned rank and for noncommissioned officers and privates; and whether anyone recommended for a commission and rejected only on account of eyesight may have his case again considered if he passes the sight test as a private?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Macpherson)

There are two distinct standards of eyesight for commissioned rank and for N.C.O.s and privates. A man whose visual standard is only that considered necessary for a private would not be eligible for commissioned rank.
