HC Deb 04 July 1917 vol 95 cc1110-1
90. Mr. LYNCH

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether, in view of the importance attached to symbols as giving inspiration and providing rallying cries for the nation, he will consider the advisability of removing from the principal streets of London and of Ireland all statues of deceased kings, and put in their places those of great leaders of thought, great men of science, great poets, and great martyrs for national causes?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Sir Alfred Mond)

The Act 17 and 18 Victoria, chapter 33, entrusted the Commissioners of Works with the care of certain statues in London, and unless that trust is removed by an amending Act I am most certainly not prepared to violate it in the manner suggested nor in any other. I am not responsible for anything that may be done in Ireland.

Mr. LYNCH

May I ask if this answer gives a fair measure of the mentality of the Government?
