Sir HERBERT ROBERTSasked the Secretary of State for India whether any 592 steps have been taken in India since the outbreak of the War to reduce the consumption of intoxicating liquors; and whether, in view of the economic conditions arising from the War, it is intended to impose special restrictions upon the manufacture and sale of such liquors during the continuance of the War?
§ The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Chamberlain)The duty on imported spirit has been raised, as has also in many areas the Excise Duty on country spirit. I am not aware that further measures are contemplated by the Indian Government.
