HC Deb 26 April 1917 vol 92 cc2574-5
42. Mr. HOGGE

asked the Secretary to the Local Government Board whether the National Register still exists; whether it is kept up to date; when it was revised last; and what uses it is now put; and when it was last used?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Hayes Fisher)

It is the duty of every local registration authority under the National Registration Act, 1015, to maintain the register so far as it relates to their area. The process of revision which is carried out under the instructions of the Local Government Board and the Registrar-General is a continuous one. The Register is still used by the military recruiting authorities, and recently it has been made available for purposes of the National Service recruiting scheme.

Mr. HOGGE

If the National Register is kept up in this way what is the necessity for all this expense, in all these Departments, in getting this information?

Mr. HAYES FISHER

It is being dealt with by the National Service Department.
