HC Deb 26 April 1917 vol 92 cc2556-7
21. Mr. O'LEARY

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware that a quantity of fresh fish consigned to the English markets from Baltimore, Allihies, and other fishing centres in West Cork was held up in Cork in course of transit within the past week for want of adequate railway and tonnage facilities; whether he can state the number of boxes of fish so held up and whether, having regard to the scarcity of food and the discouragement which such a condition of affairs is likely to have on the fishing industry, he will take the necessary steps to prevent this state of things arising again?

Mr. DUKE

Considerable quantities of fish were offered in the South of Ireland for transit to English markets during the past week, and in the case of part of these consignments delays occurred. The Railway Executive Committee will do everything possible to prevent any avoidable delay.

Mr. O'LEARY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that on Saturday last a large quantity of fish had to be destroyed?

Mr. DUKE

It is quite possible that in the event of an exceptionally large catch of mackerel or any other seasonable fish the arrangements which have been made in ordinary circumstances for forwarding are not sufficient.

Mr. FLAVIN

Why are there not sufficient railway and shipping facilities for the forwarding of food?

Mr. DUKE

Anyone who is familiar with the circumstances of the fishing industry know that occasionally there are cases where you get a very great take of fish, and it is impossible to foresee a case of that sort and ensure that none of it is lost.

Mr. O'LEARY

Will the right hon. Gentleman put before the Congested Districts Board the necessity of establishing ice depots in some of the larger fishing centres in the South and West of Ireland, so as to conserve the fish?

Mr. DUKE

That suggestion shall be considered.

Mr. O'SHAUGHNESSY

Has not the right hon. Gentleman's notice been called to the frequent complaints of delay in the carriage of goods by rail in Ireland?

Mr. DUKE

That is so wide a question that I would rather not answer it until I have time to look into the allegation.
