HC Deb 25 April 1917 vol 92 c2383
38. Mr. BILLING

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture whether in connection with the proposed wholesale slaughter of cattle, it is intended to have public slaughter-houses in the vicinity of cold storage facilities and preservative factories; whether arrangements are being made for the systematic preservation of the meat by cold storage, canning, bottling, salting and smoking; and if he will make inquiries of General Smuts for information as to the method of making biltong?

Sir R. WINFREY

The whole question of the systematic preservation of meat in connection with the proposed reduction of live stock is now being gone into thoroughly on behalf of the Government by an Interdepartmental Committee.

Mr. BILLING

Will the hon. Gentleman answer the last part of the question?

Sir R. WINFREY

I am afraid this is all the answer I can give to-day.
