HC Deb 25 April 1917 vol 92 cc2380-1
34. Major WHELER

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture whether, in view of the shortage of feeding and fattening cakes for cattle during the coming autumn and winter, he will consider the desirability of the purchase and slaughter by the Government from farmers in August and September of large numbers of grass-fed fat cattle to be placed in cold storage for the use of the civilian population and troops, as this proposal would encourage the production of numbers of grass-fed fat cattle while enabling farmers to limit their herds directly the grazing season was over?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Richard Winfrey)

The Board of Agriculture and Fisheries have under consideration the question of reducing the number of live stock in the country during the coming autumn and winter, and the desir- ability of storing a portion of the meat so obtained forms part of the matter under consideration.
